How to measure or choose the starting value
Measure the treatment footprint. For rectangular beds, use length × width; for multiple beds, calculate each and add. Choose the intended applied depth from your gardening plan or product guidance. Convert inches to feet before multiplying by square feet. If compost will be mixed rather than laid as a uniform layer, the simple layer model is still a useful volume reference but not a statement of final soil depth.
Adjustments that change the estimate
Existing soil level, settling, moisture and blending method can change visible depth. Bagged compost volume can differ by product, and bulk material may settle in transport. Keep these purchasing effects separate from the application depth so the planning logic remains transparent.
How to use the number before you buy
Convert the calculated cubic feet to cubic yards or divide by bag volume. Round packages only at the final step. If delivery increments create extra compost, plan where it will be used rather than increasing the target depth merely to consume the surplus.
