Cabinet Crown Molding Calculator: Run & Stock Pieces

Plan decorative cabinet crown as a measured linear finish instead of deriving it from room perimeter or cabinet count. Enter the exposed upper-cabinet run, add end returns or short side sections, apply a visible miter/cut allowance and convert the target into whole stock lengths.

Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Measured crown run

exposed upper-cabinet run + end returns

Measure only cabinet crown, not whole-room crown molding.

Cut reserve

measured run × entered allowance

Makes miter and matching reserve explicit.

Purchase target

measured run + cut reserve

Do not inflate cabinet dimensions to create waste.

Pieces to buy

round target ÷ stock length up

Round at the actual sold stock length.

How to measure this project

Measure along the cabinet crown path, not the wall perimeter. Include exposed ends, side returns and crown that wraps a peninsula or refrigerator panel only when those sections use the same profile. Record inside and outside corners because they affect cut planning even though the calculator keeps them inside a percentage allowance. If cabinet heights step up or down, split those runs so transitions are not hidden inside one total.

Before you buy materials

Confirm the actual molding profile and sold length. Long uninterrupted runs may benefit from longer stock to reduce joints, while short stepped cabinets can create more reusable offcuts. Finish matching and pattern/grain can reduce offcut reuse. The calculator does not decide blocking, attachment, ceiling scribe or crown angle; those are installation/design details outside linear quantity.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this a room crown-molding calculator?

No. It is scoped to crown installed on or above cabinetry.

Should I count every wall corner?

Corner count affects cut planning, but the quantity tool uses the measured run plus a visible allowance rather than prescribing a miter method.

Can I mix 8 ft and 12 ft stock?

Run separate scenarios or calculate each stock group separately so the rounding remains traceable.
