Miter magnitude

atan[sin(spring angle) ÷ tan(corner angle ÷ 2)]

Compound miter-table rotation magnitude for crown lying flat.

Bevel magnitude

asin[cos(spring angle) × cos(corner angle ÷ 2)]

Blade-tilt magnitude for the same flat-cut setup.

Inside-corner orientation

left piece: miter right / bevel left; right piece: miter left / bevel right

Directions assume top edge of crown against the fence.

Outside-corner orientation

left piece: miter left / bevel right; right piece: miter right / bevel left

The direction pattern reverses for the outside corner.

How to measure this project

Use an angle finder, bevel gauge or equivalent method to measure the actual angle between the two wall faces at the crown location. Measure or verify the crown spring angle from the molding profile/product information or from a correctly positioned sample. Keep those as two separate inputs: the wall corner controls the joint, while the spring angle controls how a flat crown projects into the compound cut.

Supports: Bosch defines spring angle as the angle between wall and crown and publishes flat-on-table 90-degree reference settings, including 31.6 degree miter / 33.9 degree bevel for 38-degree spring crown and 35.3 / 30.0 for 45-degree spring crown.

Boundary: The benchmark assumes a consistent molding profile and an exactly 90-degree corner. HomeMeasureLab recalculates measured geometry but does not replace the saw manual, molding instructions, scrap test cuts or field fit verification.

Frequently asked questions

Why are 31.6° miter and 33.9° bevel common numbers?

They are the standard flat-cut settings for a 90° corner with 38° spring crown. They are a useful benchmark, not a universal answer for an out-of-square corner or a different spring angle.

What if my wall corner measures 88° or 92°?

Enter the measured angle. The calculator recomputes both miter and bevel instead of forcing the 90° benchmark.

Does inside versus outside change the angle magnitude?

For the same measured wall angle and spring angle, the compound magnitudes are the same; the left/right miter and bevel directions reverse.

Can I use these settings while holding crown nested against the fence?

No. This calculator is explicitly for crown laid flat. Nested cutting uses a different physical setup and should follow the saw and crown instructions.

Does this replace a test cut?

No. Real molding, corners and saw calibration vary. Use scrap/test pieces and dry-fit before committing project stock.
