    Face area

    door width × door height × painted faces × door count

    One or both slab faces are counted explicitly.

    Optional edge area

    2 × (width + height) × slab thickness × door count

    Included only when the four slab edges are part of the finish scope.

    Coated coverage

    paintable door area × finish coats × (1 + entered allowance)

    The allowance remains visible instead of being hidden in the door dimensions.

    Paint volume

    coated coverage ÷ entered product coverage

    Use current coverage information for the selected coating and surface condition.

    Containers to buy

    paint volume ÷ entered container size, rounded up

    Whole-container rounding happens after the paint volume is calculated.

    How to measure this project

    Measure the door slab width and height at the finished face. Count only doors that are similar enough to share one size, face count, coating system and coat count. Decide whether the project paints one face or both faces. If the four slab edges receive the same finish, measure or verify the slab thickness and include them; measure jambs, casing, stops, sidelights or transoms separately because they are not part of the slab rectangle.

    Before you buy materials

    Use the technical data or label for the exact paint or enamel being considered. Coverage can change with substrate texture, porosity, color change, application method and film-build requirements. Small door projects may be sold in quarts or liters rather than whole gallons, so enter the actual container size available to you. Primer, caulk, patching compounds, masking materials and labor are outside this finish-paint quantity unless calculated separately.

    Frequently asked questions

    How much paint do I need for one door?

    Measure the slab, choose one or two painted faces, include edges only when they are actually coated, multiply by coats, then divide by the coverage of the selected product. The calculator keeps those steps visible and rounds only at the entered container size.

    Should I count both sides of the door?

    Count the faces that are actually part of your finish scope. Exterior and interior faces can use different products or colors, so run separate calculations when the coating systems differ.

    Does this include the door frame and trim?

    No. Door slab faces and optional slab edges are the modeled geometry. Jambs, stops, casing, sidelights and transoms should be measured separately.

    What coverage rate should I use?

    Use the current coverage information for the exact paint or enamel being purchased. Manufacturer guidance notes that real yield changes with surface condition and application, so the example default is not a universal specification.

    Why use a quart-size container input?

    A single door can need much less than one gallon. Enter the package size actually sold for the selected product so whole-container rounding reflects the purchase you can make.
