Insulation Calculator: Batts or Rolls by Coverage

Estimate how many insulation packages cover a measured surface after subtracting major openings and adding a project allowance. Thermal design and required R-value remain separate decisions.

When to use this calculator

You know the insulated surface and package coverage and need package quantity.

Use a different calculator when

Use Wall/Ceiling Area for geometry only; this tool does not choose R-value or assembly design.

Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Gross area

length × height

Measured insulated plane.

Net area

gross area − major openings

Do not subtract small interruptions automatically.

Coverage target

net area × (1 + allowance)

Allows for cuts and fitting loss.

Packages

target ÷ package coverage

Rounds to whole packages.

How to measure this project

Measure each wall, ceiling or other insulated plane separately when dimensions or product sizes differ. Subtract major openings only if they truly remove insulation area; framing cavities, headers and irregular spaces can still require cut pieces.

Before you buy materials

Choose insulation type, thickness, R-value, facing and vapor-control strategy from the project design, manufacturer instructions and applicable requirements. Then use the product package coverage as the quantity input. This calculator is intentionally not a thermal-design tool.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does this tell me what R-value I need?

No. R-value and assembly design must come from the project requirements and applicable guidance.

Should I subtract studs from wall area?

Normally the package coverage approach is based on cavity coverage; use the product packaging and installation plan rather than subtracting framing area manually.

Can I use this for blown insulation?

This calculator is intended for coverage-based packages. Blown products use bag-yield and installed-density rules that should be handled with product-specific guidance.
