Pergola Shade Slat Calculator: Spacing & Pieces

Plan repeated shade slats or decorative battens after the pergola structure and slat layout have been selected. The calculator converts the covered width into slat count and linear footage while explicitly avoiding rafter sizing, beam spacing, post design, wind/snow loads or code compliance.

Choose the right tool

When to use this calculator

You need non-structural pergola shade/decorative slat pieces after structure and spacing are selected.

Use a different calculator when

It does not size pergola rafters, beams, posts or structural spans.

Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Slat module

installed face width + selected gap

Layout input only.

Base slats

covered width ÷ module, rounded up

Count repeated pieces.

Purchase slats

base count × (1 + spare), rounded up

Whole full-length pieces.

Linear material

purchase slats × slat cut length

Use after structure is set.

How to measure this project

Measure the dimension perpendicular to the repeated shade slats; that is the width the slat modules must cover. Measure the actual cut length of each slat separately. Do not use overall pergola footprint dimensions without checking orientation, because swapping slat direction changes both repeat count and cut length. Split zones when a pergola has different roof bays, interruptions or decorative patterns.

Before you buy materials

Use the installed slat face width and clear gap selected for the project. This calculator rounds to full slat pieces rather than pretending structural members can be spliced efficiently. Confirm material profile, span capability, fastening, thermal movement, wind/snow exposure and any structural or code requirements outside the quantity tool. Spare percentage is for cuts, defects or future matching pieces, not hidden geometry.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does this size pergola rafters or beams?

No. It is only for non-structural shade/decorative slat quantity after the structure is designed.

Does smaller gap mean the same shade performance everywhere?

No. Shade performance depends on orientation, sun angle and product geometry; gap is simply an entered layout value.

Can I splice shade slats to reduce pieces?

Only if the selected system explicitly permits that detail; this calculator assumes full-length slat pieces.
