Slope ratio

rise ÷ horizontal run

For X/12 pitch, divide X by 12.

Angle

atan(rise ÷ run)

Convert the arctangent from radians to degrees.

Slope percent

(rise ÷ run) × 100

A 6/12 roof has a 50% slope.

Pitch multiplier

√(1 + (rise ÷ run)²)

Converts horizontal plan length/area into sloped length/area when the geometry model is appropriate.

How to measure this project

Use a pitch value from construction documents, a trustworthy measurement record, safe ground/attic geometry or a qualified measurement source. For rise-and-run mode, both measurements must use the same unit and the run must be horizontal. Do not measure the sloped rafter length and enter it as run.

Before you buy materials

Pitch is only one geometric input. Roofing products can have manufacturer minimum slopes, special underlayment requirements and project-specific code or assembly requirements. Verify those requirements separately before selecting materials or installation details.

What angle is a 6/12 roof?

A 6/12 pitch is about 26.565 degrees because atan(6 ÷ 12) ≈ 26.565°.

Is roof pitch the same as roof slope?

They describe the same inclination in different formats. Pitch is commonly written X/12, while slope may be expressed as a ratio, percentage or angle.

Can I use the pitch multiplier to estimate roof area?

Yes for a compatible simple plan geometry. Use Roof Area Calculator for a simple gable footprint, and use measured roof planes for complex roofs.

Should I climb onto the roof to measure pitch?

No. Use safer existing measurements, plans, ground/attic methods where appropriate, or qualified measurement when roof access would create a fall hazard.
