When to use this calculator

You have a simple symmetrical gable footprint and pitch and need sloped surface geometry.

Use a different calculator when

Use Roofing Shingle or Underlayment after roof area is known; complex roofs need plane-based measurement.

Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Roof plan footprint

(length + 2×overhang) × (width + 2×overhang)

Horizontal footprint including entered overhang.

Pitch multiplier

√(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²)

Converts horizontal run to slope length.

Sloped area

plan footprint × multiplier

For a simple symmetrical gable.

Material order

sloped area + product rules

Waste and packaging are separate.

How to measure this project

Measure horizontal building or roof-plan dimensions rather than the sloped surface when using the pitch multiplier method. Enter the horizontal overhang at the roof edges represented by the model. For additions, dormers or multiple roof levels, split the roof into documented planes instead of assuming one rectangle.

Before you buy materials

Roof work involves fall hazards and complex flashing/details. Use plans, aerial measurements or qualified field measurement where appropriate. This calculator estimates geometry only; it does not determine shingle waste, underlayment laps, ventilation, structural loading or safe work methods.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculate roof squares or shingle bundles?

No. It estimates roof surface area. Use the Roofing Shingle Calculator to apply waste and bundle coverage.

Can I use this for a hip roof?

Not reliably with the simple gable model. Measure the actual roof planes or use plan-based geometry.

Is a 6:12 pitch entered as 6?

Yes. The rise input is inches of vertical rise for 12 inches of horizontal run.
