Roofing & Exterior

Roofing Calculator: Area, Squares, Bundles & Materials

Build a quantity-first roofing material plan from either a simple gable footprint and pitch or an already measured sloped roof surface. Product coverage stays editable so the estimate can follow the materials you actually plan to buy.

Choose the right tool

When to use this calculator

You need project-level roofing squares, shingle bundles, underlayment rolls and compatible linear-accessory quantities from a simple gable or measured roof area.

Use a different calculator when

Use Roof Pitch for slope conversion or focused component calculators when only one material is needed; this tool does not design structure, flashing, ventilation or fastening requirements.

Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Roof surface

horizontal plan area × pitch multiplier OR verified measured sloped area

Use simple-gable geometry only when the roof matches the model.

Roofing squares

shingle purchase area ÷ 100 sq ft

One roofing square is 100 sq ft of roof coverage.

Field packages

planning area ÷ entered effective coverage, rounded up

Shingles and underlayment use separate coverage/allowance inputs.

Linear accessories

measured/derived run × (1 + allowance) ÷ package or stock length

Starter, ridge/hip cap and drip edge remain separate takeoffs.

Roofing nails

roofing squares × entered nails-per-square, then round boxes up

The entered fastening rate must come from the selected project/product requirements.

How to measure this project

For a simple rectangular gable, use horizontal plan dimensions and a verified pitch. Overhang is entered as horizontal projection. For hips, valleys, dormers, additions, multiple roof levels or mixed slopes, switch to measured-area mode and total verified sloped roof planes separately; measure eave, ridge/hip and drip-edge runs from plans or a safe/qualified measurement source.

Before you buy materials

Replace every coverage default with values for the selected products. Shingle bundles, underlayment effective coverage, starter packages, ridge-cap bundles and drip-edge stock lengths vary. Product minimum slope, underlayment layers, fastening, flashing, ventilation, ice-barrier requirements and code conditions remain outside this quantity estimator.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does the Roofing Calculator replace the Roof Area Calculator?

No. Roof Area is a focused geometry tool. Roofing Calculator carries compatible geometry or a measured area forward into multiple material quantities.

What is a roofing square?

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof coverage. This calculator reports squares from the allowance-adjusted shingle planning area.

Why are shingle bundle and underlayment coverage editable?

Coverage varies by product and installation requirements. Editable coverage prevents a universal default from being treated as a product specification.

Can I use simple-gable mode for a hip roof or dormers?

No. Use verified measured roof planes and measured accessory runs when the roof does not match one rectangular symmetrical gable with one pitch.
