Concrete Bag Yield: From Cubic Feet to Bags

Bag yield is the mixed concrete volume produced by one bag. Use the yield printed by the manufacturer for the exact mix and bag size.

Why this planning detail matters

Concrete geometry produces a volume, while bagged mix is sold by weight. Yield is the bridge between the two. It is not safe to divide project cubic feet by bag pounds because weight and mixed volume are different quantities. How to measure or choose the starting value

First calculate concrete volume in cubic feet or cubic meters from the shape dimensions. Then read the package yield for the selected mix. Manufacturer documentation may state yield in cubic feet per bag. Keep that value editable because specialty mixes and bag sizes can differ from general examples.

Adjustments that change the estimate

Spillage, uneven excavation, subgrade variation and over-excavation can increase actual volume. Dry bag yield also assumes proper mixing. Post holes and irregular repairs are particularly sensitive to real hole dimensions. Use a visible contingency only after measuring as accurately as practical.

Divide required concrete volume by yield per bag and round up to whole bags. On larger jobs, compare bagged concrete with ready-mix logistics rather than assuming hundreds of bags are practical. Structural design, reinforcing, thickness and code requirements are separate from material volume.
