How to Measure Brick Course Height for a Story Pole

Brick coursing starts with elevations, not a generic course chart. A reliable layout field needs a bottom datum, intended top-of-brick elevation, actual unit height and the joint requirement that applies to the selected masonry.

Define Datum 0 before measuring height

Choose the physical line that represents the bottom of the first brick course. Record elevations from that one datum so later course marks do not accumulate separate tape origins.

Measure to the intended top-of-brick elevation

The calculator models bottom of first brick to top of final brick. Do not silently include a cap, coping, sealant joint or unrelated finish thickness in that height.

Use actual brick face height

Brick names do not guarantee one universal face height. Use the specified/manufacturer dimension for the exact unit or measure representative material when the project permits field verification.

Get the bed joint from the project

A familiar joint size is not a universal default. Mortar joint requirements, modular coordination and tolerances belong to the masonry system and project documents.

Split interrupted elevations into separate checks

Window sills, lintels, shelf angles, bond beams, changes in brick size and other details can control coursing. Treat each constrained elevation as its own check instead of forcing one average wall height.

Use marks as a story-pole cross-check

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure to the top of a wall cap?

Not unless the cap is itself part of the brick course field being modeled. Usually the calculator target is top of the final brick, with cap/coping handled separately.

What if a window sill must line up with a course?

Treat the sill elevation as an additional coursing check. A wall can hit its overall top height yet miss a constrained opening elevation.

Can I make a story pole from the marks?

Yes as a planning transfer reference, provided the datum and project requirements are verified. Field tolerances and workmanship still need normal checks.
