Define the pattern boundaries before measuring
Decide where the first bay or batten is visually allowed to begin and where the last one must finish. Inside corners, outside corners, full-height door casing, built-ins and intentional termination trim can act as hard boundaries. A tape dimension across several unrelated visual zones creates a mathematically even answer that is hard to install cleanly.
Measure the finished wall span horizontally
Take the width along the wall plane between the selected boundaries. Use the finished or reliably specified dimensions when trim buildup will change the visible span. Record the measurement from one named datum such as the left casing edge so later marks can be checked against the same reference.
Use actual batten face width
The spacing formula subtracts the visible face width of every batten. Nominal lumber names do not always equal the installed face dimension, and ripped MDF or other trim may use a custom width. Measure or confirm the finished face width that will actually occupy the wall.
Treat openings and centered features deliberately
A door or window is not automatically a simple area deduction for a spacing layout. If full-height casing breaks the pattern, solve each side as a separate span. If a mirror, window or vanity must be centered within the pattern, that is a more constrained layout problem and should be decided before treating the whole wall as one uninterrupted span.
Record height for material takeoff, not horizontal spacing
Vertical batten height does not change the equal-gap arithmetic, but it does control total linear footage and whether a selected stock length reaches the full height without an unwanted joint. Measure height from the actual lower to upper trim boundary for the decorative member.
Recheck one long span before marking
A small width error changes every bay. Recheck the controlling wall span, then use one datum for all calculated positions. This is faster to audit than walking a tape from one previously marked batten to the next.

Choose one continuous pattern zone
Identify the two boundaries that truly control one balanced layout.
Measure finished wall width
Measure horizontally between those boundaries and record the datum.
Measure batten face width
Use actual installed visible width rather than a nominal product label.
Record batten height
Use the finished vertical trim boundaries for linear-foot planning.
Identify breaks and special features
Split hard boundaries into separate spans; flag centered features before solving.
Solve and mark from one datum
Use the calculator’s exact solved positions instead of accumulating rounded gaps.
Example: casing creates two different spans
A 14 ft wall includes a full-height doorway with casing that visually interrupts the treatment. Rather than subtracting the doorway width from 14 ft and distributing battens through the missing area, measure the left and right finished spans independently and solve each pattern zone from its own boundary.

Frequently asked questions
Should I subtract a window from the wall width?
Not automatically. Decide whether its casing breaks the pattern or whether the battens continue as a coordinated layout around it. Equal-spacing math needs actual layout boundaries, not an area-style opening deduction.
Do baseboards change the spacing?
They usually do not change the horizontal gap formula, but they can change vertical batten height and the finished way battens terminate. Measure the decorative member height accordingly.
Can I measure one whole room and divide around corners?
A balanced elevation normally works better when each wall face or intentional continuous zone is solved from its own visible boundaries.
What if the two ends use different trim widths?
That is no longer the calculator’s simple symmetric edge model. Record the real boundaries and either treat the trim as outside the solved span or use a custom layout workflow.
