Equal-spacing formula & layout assumptions

Both-edge clear gap

(wall width − batten count × batten width) ÷ (batten count − 1)

Use only when the first and last battens sit flush with the two layout boundaries.

Equal-end clear gap

(wall width − batten count × batten width) ÷ (batten count + 1)

The two end spaces and every interior clear gap are equal.

On-center spacing

exact clear gap + actual batten width

Adjacent battens share the same center-to-center increment once the exact gap is solved.

Mark position

first batten start + index × on-center spacing

Calculate each mark from one reference edge using full precision; do not walk a rounded gap across the wall.

How to measure this project

Measure the finished horizontal span where one balanced decorative pattern begins and ends. Note baseboard/top rail/casing intersections separately, and use the finished visible batten face width. If a window, door or other full-height feature interrupts the pattern, decide whether it is a true pattern boundary or a feature that needs a separate centered-layout decision before using one simple span.

Before you buy materials

The result reports vertical batten linear footage and whether the entered stock is at least as long as the batten height. Do not assume shorter stock can be invisibly spliced. Add top/bottom rails, returns, trim, waste, fastening and substrate materials separately from the vertical-batten spacing calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the exact gap different from my target gap?

A wall needs a whole number of battens. Target-gap mode evaluates feasible whole counts and chooses the layout whose exact clear gap is closest to the target you entered.

Should I divide by the number of battens or the number of spaces?

Neither rule is universal by itself. The denominator depends on the edge treatment: with battens at both edges there are count minus one gaps; with equal open end spaces there are count plus one equal gaps.

Can I use this for structural wall furring?

No. Wall Furring Strip Calculator owns project-selected support spacing and stock quantity. Decorative board-and-batten spacing is a different user job.

Does this include top and bottom rails?

No. This calculator solves vertical batten layout only. Rails, trim returns and other horizontal members should be measured and purchased separately.

How do I avoid cumulative rounding error?

Use the solved full-precision spacing and calculate each mark from the same starting datum. Do not add a rounded displayed spacing to the previous mark repeatedly.
