Equal-panel geometry & layout assumptions

Clear panel width

(wall run − (panel count + 1) × stile width) ÷ panel count

A row of N equal panel openings requires N + 1 stile faces when a stile sits at each end.

Repeat module

clear panel width + stile width

Successive stile starts repeat by one panel opening plus one stile face.

Stile start mark

index × repeat module

Calculate every mark from Datum 0 rather than stepping a rounded display value across the wall.

Clear framed-panel height

panel-band height − top rail face − bottom rail face

This is a simple rectangular framed-band model, not a universal joinery detail.

How to measure this project

Choose one wall section whose panel rhythm begins and ends at clear visual boundaries. Measure the finished run at the elevation where the stiles will actually sit, because out-of-square corners and casing can change the usable span. Record the intended framed-band height and the actual visible face widths of the top rail, bottom rail and stiles. If a feature such as a doorway, fireplace or built-in interrupts the rhythm, decide whether it is a new layout datum or a centered feature before combining measurements.

Before you buy materials

Use the result as a layout and trim-run planning aid, not a finished cut list. The modeled rail run is two full wall runs and the modeled stile run uses the clear distance between rail faces. Real installations can add caps, ledges, baseboard transitions, returns, miter waste, cope joints, panel inserts or stock-length constraints. Verify the selected molding/profile, substrate, fastening and finish system before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How many stiles do I need for five wainscoting panels?

In this end-stile model, five clear panel openings use six stiles: one at each wall boundary plus four between adjacent panels.

Why is my exact panel width different from the target width?

The wall must close with a whole number of panels and stiles. Target mode chooses the feasible whole count whose exact clear opening is closest to the width you entered.

Does the calculator tell me how high wainscoting should be?

No. Height is an explicit project/design input. The tool only subtracts the entered rail face widths from the entered framed-band height.

Is this the same as the Board & Batten Spacing Calculator?

No. Board & Batten solves repeated decorative battens and open gaps, including alternate edge conditions. Wainscoting solves equal clear panel openings bounded by end and interior stiles in a framed panel band.
