Define the pattern boundary before measuring
The calculator assumes one continuous run with an end stile at each boundary. Inside corners, full-height casing, fireplaces and built-ins often become natural stopping points. If a design visually continues across a feature, plan that intentionally instead of subtracting a random width from one long wall.
Measure where the trim will actually sit
Walls can be out of square or slightly tapered. Measure the horizontal run at or near the elevation of the panel/stile band rather than relying only on baseboard or ceiling dimensions. If the run changes materially from bottom to top, verify the layout against the actual installation line before cutting repeated pieces.
Use actual face widths
A nominal 1×4 does not tell the calculator the visible installed width. Ripped MDF, applied molding, edge profiles and paint buildup can all change the finished face. Measure or confirm the actual stile and rail face dimensions used by the visible layout.
Separate overall band height from panel opening height
The framed band height is the vertical zone occupied by the top rail, bottom rail and clear panel opening in the simple model. The clear opening height is that band height minus the two entered rail face widths. Baseboard, cap, ledge and raised-panel details can sit outside or overlap this model, so keep those project details separate.
Pick one datum and keep every mark tied to it
Do not add a rounded panel width and stile width repeatedly from the previous mark. Small rounding errors accumulate. Use the left pattern boundary as Datum 0 and calculate every stile start or center from that same reference.
Dry-check the last stile before cutting the whole run
After marking several early positions, confirm the calculated final stile lands at the intended far boundary. This quick closure check catches a wrong wall dimension, nominal-vs-actual stile width or an accidental boundary assumption before material is cut.

Measure the finished run
Measure boundary to boundary where the panel band will actually be installed.
Record face dimensions
Measure actual stile, top-rail and bottom-rail face widths.
Set the framed-band height
Enter the project-selected vertical band dimension; do not substitute a generic proportion.
Solve the layout
Use target panel width or a fixed panel count, then accept the exact solved opening.
Transfer from Datum 0
Mark every stile start/center from the same boundary and verify the final closure.
A casing-to-corner wall section
Suppose the room wall is 13 ft overall, but 4 in of door casing at the left and a 2 in corner trim return at the right define the visible panel field. If the wainscot should terminate against those finished trim edges, measure the clear casing-to-corner span directly and use that number as the calculator run rather than subtracting rough trim allowances from the 13 ft plan dimension.

Frequently asked questions
Should I include door casing in the wall run?
Only if the wainscot pattern is intentionally designed to continue through or around it. In many rooms the casing edge is the visual pattern boundary, so measure to that finished edge.
Can I measure at the baseboard and use that width everywhere?
Use the actual installation elevation when possible. A tapered or out-of-square wall can produce a different run higher in the panel band.
Why does actual stile width matter so much?
Every panel opening shares the remaining space after all stile faces are subtracted. A small width error multiplied across several stiles can noticeably change the final panel width.
