Why this planning detail matters
Unlike tile or flooring, paint often gains a useful reserve simply because it is sold in fixed containers. If a calculation calls for 2.2 gallons and the purchase is three one-gallon cans, the difference is already visible. Adding another hidden percentage on top can double-count the reserve. A transparent plan should show calculated quantity and purchased quantity separately.
How to measure or choose the starting value
Begin with net paintable area, coat count and label coverage. Do not add inches to the room or lower coverage just to force overage unless the surface justifies that change. Once the calculated volume is known, note the available can sizes for the product. The difference between calculated and purchased volume is the first form of touch-up reserve.
Adjustments that change the estimate
Spraying, rough texture, porous repairs, spills, container loss and future touch-ups can justify more reserve than a smooth roller-applied room. Color matching also matters: keeping some paint from the same batch can be valuable. On very large jobs, package combinations such as five-gallon pails can change how much natural overage results from rounding.

Label leftover paint clearly and store or dispose of it according to product and local guidance. From a planning perspective, the key is to know why extra paint exists.
