Project result

Your bathroom remodel planning range

Compare the scope-adjusted national benchmark, known add-ons and a separate contingency reserve before treating any number as a working budget.

When to use this calculator

You need an early whole-bathroom project budget range with visible 2026 benchmark rates, local adjustment, known add-ons and contingency.

Use a different calculator when

Do not use it to price one material package, design plumbing/waterproofing/electrical work, or replace a local contractor scope and quote.

Methodology

2026 cost-range model & assumptions

Base planning range

floor area × editable low/high benchmark rate × local market factor

The rates are visible inputs. Replace them with a current local benchmark or quote basis when you have better information.

Known add-ons

base range + entered permits / layout / specialty add-ons

Use this field for known costs that are not already represented in the rate basis. Do not double-count work already included in your contractor scope.

Contingency reserve

planning subtotal × contingency %

Contingency is shown separately so hidden-condition reserve is not confused with the expected project subtotal.

Budget target range

planning subtotal + contingency reserve

The output is a range for early planning, not a bid, appraisal or promise of local market pricing.

How to measure this project

Use the finished bathroom floor area as the size basis. For irregular rooms, split the floor into simple rectangles and add them, or use the Irregular Room Area Calculator first. Room area is only one driver: wet-area complexity, plumbing movement, finish level and hidden-condition risk can dominate cost in a small space.

Before you buy materials

Before committing to a budget, replace benchmark rates with current local evidence where possible: written contractor scopes, supplier pricing, permit schedules and known specialty work. Keep plumbing/electrical/layout changes explicit, and do not treat a low online average as a substitute for waterproofing, code or manufacturer requirements.

Benchmarks are dated planning evidence, not live local prices. Replace them when you have stronger project-specific information.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why does the calculator show a range instead of one average?

Bathroom projects compress plumbing, waterproofing, tile, electrical and fixtures into a small space. Scope and local labor can change the result more than floor area, so a transparent range is more useful than a false-precision single number.

What does the local market factor do?

It scales the national benchmark portion of the estimate. It does not change your known add-ons. Leave it at 1.00 unless you have credible local evidence for a higher or lower cost environment.

Should I enter plumbing relocation in known add-ons?

Yes if you have a credible allowance or quote and the benchmark rate you chose does not already include that work. Avoid double-counting any line item already included in a contractor scope.

Does this calculator include hidden water damage or structural repairs?

No specific hidden repair is assumed. Use contingency for uncertainty and replace it with actual scope and pricing after conditions are known.
