When to use this calculator

You are measuring one rectangular room and want both floor area and perimeter as reusable project inputs.

Use a different calculator when

For a generic rectangle use Square Footage; for wall surface use Wall Area.

Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Room area

length × width

Uses finished inside dimensions.

Perimeter

2 × (length + width)

Useful for trim and edge quantities.

Square yards

square feet ÷ 9

A reference conversion for US flooring.

Metric area

square feet × 0.09290304

The same area expressed in square meters.

How to measure this project

Measure along the finished floor from wall to wall. For alcoves, closets or offsets, split the footprint into rectangles and measure each section separately. Record the dimensions you used and recheck any section that is irregular, tapered or interrupted before relying on the final quantity.

Before you buy materials

Area is a starting quantity, not a purchase quantity. Flooring, tile and other products typically need waste and package rounding, so continue to the material-specific calculator before buying. Compare the calculated target with the exact package, coverage and availability offered by the supplier, then round only at the final purchase step.

No. Room area here means the horizontal floor footprint.

How do I measure an L-shaped room?

Divide it into rectangles, calculate each area and add them.
