Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Purchase target

room area + allowance

Coverage target before roll-layout optimization.

Square yards

purchase sq ft ÷ 9

Common US carpet area reference.

How to measure this project

Measure the longest finished room length and width. Add closets or alcoves as separate rectangles if they will receive the same carpet. Record the dimensions you used and recheck any section that is irregular, tapered or interrupted before relying on the final quantity.

Before you buy materials

Carpet is commonly supplied in fixed roll widths, so seam layout and room orientation can increase the actual order. Treat this as a coverage estimate and confirm the cut plan with the supplier or installer. Compare the calculated target with the exact package, coverage and availability offered by the supplier, then round only at the final purchase step.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculate carpet roll length?

No. Roll width, seams and orientation require a layout plan.

Should I include closets?

Yes if they will be carpeted; measure and add their area.

Is 10% always enough?

No. Complex rooms, pattern matching and roll layout can require more.
