The difference from room area is the material available for waste and leftovers.
Measure the longest finished dimensions of the floor area. For L-shaped rooms, closets or connected spaces, divide the plan into rectangles and add their areas. Exclude permanently uncovered areas only when you are certain flooring will not run underneath them.
Use the exact square-foot coverage shown on the box because plank dimensions and packaging differ by product. Straight installations often start around 10% waste; diagonal or patterned layouts may need more. Keep suitable leftover planks for future spot repairs when color lots may change.
