Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Room area

length × width

Measured floor footprint.

Purchase target

room area × (1 + waste %)

Adds cut and layout allowance.

Plank area

plank length × plank width

Uses installed face size.

Boxes

ceil(required planks ÷ planks per box)

Rounds to whole cartons.

How to measure this project

Measure the finished floor footprint and split irregular rooms into rectangles. Use the actual plank face dimensions shown for the product rather than nominal packaging dimensions. Note hallways, closets, diagonal areas and narrow end cuts because layout can change how efficiently individual planks are used.

Before you buy materials

Enter the real pieces-per-box for the selected product and choose a waste allowance that reflects room shape and layout. The result rounds to whole boxes and shows purchased coverage, but it does not optimize a plank-by-plank cut map. Keep extra compatible material if future repairs are likely.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why calculate planks if the box lists square feet?

Piece dimensions provide a useful cross-check and help explain how whole-box rounding creates surplus.

Does this account for plank stagger?

Only through the waste allowance; it does not create a detailed staggered cut layout.

Can I use this for laminate?

Use the Laminate Flooring Calculator because packaging and assumptions may differ.
