Start from net floor area

Use the actual footprint that will receive flooring. Do not hide closets, alcoves or exclusions inside a generic waste number.

Direction changes cut behavior

Running planks across the short or long room dimension changes row count and end cuts. Hallways and connected rooms can add transitions and layout constraints.

Stagger and minimum-piece rules matter

Manufacturer installation instructions may specify end-joint spacing or minimum piece lengths. Those constraints can make some offcuts unusable.

Keep package rounding separate

Waste creates a target area; box rounding creates additional surplus. Showing both prevents the user from confusing deliberate waste allowance with unavoidable package overage.

Review the first and last rows

Before accepting a waste factor, roughly lay out the room width across the plank face width. Extremely narrow first or last rows may lead you to shift the starting line, which changes cuts on both sides. Do the same along the room length to see whether the final plank pieces would be impractically short under the product instructions. Doorways, closets and connected hallways can also change the starting reference. This quick layout check is more informative than selecting a waste percentage from habit. It does not replace a full installation plan, but it shows whether the room geometry is likely to generate ordinary or unusually high cut loss.
