Package coverage is where a precise floor measurement becomes a real shopping quantity. Two products can both be labeled as 48-inch planks yet contain different piece counts per carton. Using a generic box size can therefore change the purchase count even when net area and waste are correct. Treat coverage per box as product data that must be verified.
How to measure or choose the starting value
Find the coverage statement on the carton, manufacturer documentation or supplier listing. Confirm that the number is area per unopened box, not area per piece. If you are comparing multiple products, run the same room and waste target with each product’s coverage. Keep measurement units consistent: square feet with square feet, or square meters with square meters.
Adjustments that change the estimate
Broken cartons, dye lots, special-order return policies and minimum order quantities can affect how you purchase. Some products are sold by carton only while others allow individual pieces. The calculator’s whole-box rounding assumes full cartons, so update the plan if the supplier sells or requires a different unit.
How to use the number before you buy
Divide the waste-adjusted target area by coverage per box and round upward. Then multiply boxes by box coverage to show purchased coverage. That final line tells you how much area the packages theoretically contain and makes overage visible before checkout.

198 ÷ 22.5 = 8.8 boxes, so a whole-box plan requires 9 boxes. Those boxes contain 202.5 sq ft of nominal coverage, leaving 4.5 sq ft above the waste-adjusted target.
