Use installed face dimensions
Plank length and face width determine the area of one piece. Decorative bevels, locking edges and nominal dimensions can make packaging language confusing, so use the dimensions intended for coverage.
Cross-check pieces per box
Multiply plank face area by the number of pieces in the carton. This should be close to the listed carton coverage, subject to manufacturer rounding and product details.
Keep waste outside box coverage
Do not inflate the product coverage itself. Add waste to the room area, then divide the target by the real box coverage or piece count.
Round only to whole cartons
The decimal number of cartons is not purchasable. Rounding creates surplus that should be visible in the plan.
Reconcile the label with piece dimensions
If the piece-based coverage and the carton label differ, do not silently average them. Check whether the listed plank width is nominal or installed face width, whether all pieces in the carton are identical, and whether the manufacturer rounds the published square footage. The label coverage is normally the purchasing value because it is tied to the packaged product. The dimension-based calculation remains useful as a reasonableness check and for understanding piece count. Record both when comparing products so a box with fewer large planks is not mistaken for lower coverage simply because the piece count is smaller.

Example: 10 planks per box
If each plank covers about 2.33 sq ft and the carton contains 10 planks, the piece-based cross-check is about 23.3 sq ft per box. Compare that with the label before using it for a purchase plan.
