Usable row field

room width − 2 × entered perimeter gap

The gap is user-entered from the selected product/project requirement.

Whole row count

ceiling(usable field ÷ plank face width)

Counts all rows, including edge rows that may be ripped.

Natural last row

usable field − (row count − 1) × plank width

Applies when the first row remains full.

Balanced edge rows

[usable field − (row count − 2) × plank width] ÷ 2

Shares the edge remainder equally between first and last rows.

How to measure this project

Choose the intended plank direction first, then measure wall to wall across the rows. Use the actual installed face width of the exact plank, not a rounded product family label. Measure the room at multiple points if walls are out of parallel and plan from a straight datum rather than assuming the starting wall itself is straight. Enter the expansion gap and any minimum edge-row width from the selected product instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Why balance the first and last row?

If a full first row leaves a narrow strip at the opposite wall, trimming the first row can share that remainder across both edges and produce two more workable edge rows.

Does the expansion gap have one standard size?

No. Use the requirement for the exact flooring product, room conditions and installation system. The calculator treats the entered value as an input, not a universal rule.

Does this plan the stagger between plank ends?

No. It solves widths across the rows only. End-joint offset, starter-piece length and offcut reuse are separate layout decisions governed by the selected product instructions.

Can I use it for vinyl plank, laminate and hardwood?

Use it only when the floor is installed as straight parallel plank rows and the product instructions permit the row-width strategy. Verify expansion, locking/profile and edge-row requirements for the exact product.
