A full first row exposes the natural remainder
With the first row full, every subsequent full row consumes one plank width until the last row receives whatever remains. That natural remainder is useful because it tells you whether the simple layout ends with a broad row or a narrow sliver.
Balanced mode shares one plank plus the remainder
When the field needs a partial final row, balancing effectively redistributes the edge material: the natural last-row remainder plus one full plank width is split between the two edges. The row count does not change; only the first and last widths change.
Minimum edge width is a product rule, not a visual preference
Some manufacturers publish a minimum last-row width or similar installation requirement. Use the exact selected product's instructions in the calculator. A balanced-looking floor is not automatically compliant with every locking profile or installation method.
Expansion space changes the usable field
Perimeter expansion gaps reduce the row field before the plank widths are divided. Because different flooring systems can require different gaps, the calculator leaves this as an explicit input instead of hiding it inside a fixed formula.
A straight reference line matters after the math
The calculated edge width is a target. If the wall bows, the first row may need to be scribed so its visible/locking edge follows a straight layout line while the wall-side edge accommodates the room condition and required gap.
Do not confuse row balancing with stagger planning
Balancing solves the width direction only. End joints still need the stagger, starter-length and minimum-piece rules specified by the product. A floor can have well-balanced edge rows and still have a poor end-joint pattern.

After 3/8 in expansion space at each side, a 12 ft field leaves 143.25 in usable. Twenty-one rows are needed. A full first row leaves 3.25 in at the end, while a balanced layout makes both edge rows about 5.125 in.
