How to Measure Floor Width for Plank Layout

A plank layout can have enough material and still start badly. The key row-layout measurement is the room dimension across the planks—the direction in which rows stack—not the long dimension along each plank.

Across-row width is different from room area

Quantity calculators multiply room dimensions to estimate square footage. Row layout needs the dimension perpendicular to plank length because that is the distance consumed by repeated plank widths. A 12 × 15 ft room can therefore use either 12 ft or 15 ft as the row field depending on the chosen plank direction.

Subtract only the expansion space that belongs to the two row edges

The calculator removes one entered perimeter gap at each wall bounding the across-row field. The exact gap is not chosen by HomeMeasureLab. Flooring systems publish their own expansion requirements, and those instructions override generic examples.

Use actual installed face width

Measure or read the exact face width of the selected plank. Small differences repeat across many rows and can materially change the final edge strip. Do not use carton coverage or nominal product-family wording as a row module.

Check the room at more than one point

Walls can taper or bow. Measure near both ends of the planned rows and at intermediate points when practical. A single width can plan the nominal field, but installation still needs a straight datum plus scribing or fitting where the wall deviates.

Establish a reference line rather than trusting the wall

Manufacturer guidance commonly warns that walls are not perfectly straight. Use the calculated first-row target to establish a straight reference line, then fit the edge row to the actual wall while preserving the required expansion space.

Keep row width separate from end-joint stagger

The width calculation says nothing about where plank ends land along a row. Starter lengths, minimum end-joint offsets, doorway continuity and offcut reuse belong to a separate layout step controlled by the product instructions.
