Equal edge piece

[usable field − (N − 2) × tile face − (N − 1) × grout joint] ÷ 2

For a phase with N physical tile positions and at least two positions.

Centerline phase

odd N = tile-centered; even N = grout-joint-centered

Auto mode compares feasible parity choices and favors the larger equal edge piece.

How to measure this project

Measure the actual rectangular tile field between the boundaries that will control the finish layout. Record the actual tile face, selected joint width and any project-required perimeter gap separately. Split returns, niches, changes of plane, borders or other independent fields rather than blending them into one rectangle.

Frequently asked questions

Why compare tile-centered and grout-joint-centered layouts?

Moving the grid by half a module changes the two edge cuts. One phase can leave a narrow sliver while the other produces larger, more balanced edge pieces.

Does auto mode guarantee every edge cut is at least half a tile?

No. It chooses the better feasible straight-grid phase for the entered rectangle. Real rooms, obstructions, pattern rules and adjoining fields can make an ideal half-tile condition impossible.

Should I use the tile-position count to order tile?

No. It is a geometric cross-check. Use Tile Calculator for measured area, explicit waste, package coverage and whole-box rounding.

Does the calculator choose the perimeter gap?

No. Enter the value required by the selected system, project documents or applicable instructions. Zero means no gap has been deducted by this arithmetic, not that zero is an installation recommendation.

Can I use this for herringbone or running bond?

No. Those layouts require pattern-specific phase, offset and cut logic beyond this straight-grid calculator.
