A centerline controls phase, not just location
Once tile face and joint width establish a repeating module, moving the grid by half a module switches between a tile center and a joint at the field center. The physical field stays the same, but the number and size of the two edge pieces change. That is why two installers can both say they “centered” a layout yet produce different cuts.
Tile-centered means an odd symmetric position count
For a simple straight grid with at least two positions, a tile-centered axis has a full center tile and mirrored positions moving outward, so the position count is odd. The two perimeter pieces are calculated from the remaining usable width after interior full tiles and grout joints are accounted for.
Joint-centered means an even symmetric position count
When the field centerline falls in a grout joint, equal tile positions mirror to each side and the count is even. This phase is exactly a half-module away from the tile-centered phase. In many dimensions it produces the larger edge piece; in others the tile-centered phase does.
Auto-balance should compare edge pieces, not raw counts
More physical tile positions do not automatically mean a better layout and fewer positions do not automatically mean less material. The useful geometric comparison is the equal edge piece that each feasible phase creates. Auto mode selects the phase with the larger edge piece on each axis, while still reporting the strategy so the decision remains visible.
Half-tile guidance is a planning target, not a universal guarantee
Daltile describes adjusting a center line by half a tile when the initial loose layout leaves cuts smaller than half tile. CTEF likewise discusses centered/balanced layouts and normally avoiding cuts smaller than half size when possible. Do not turn a layout count into a material order

Example: same field, two different centered answers
If an axis and module happen to allow ten full positions exactly, the grout-joint-centered phase can land full pieces at both edges.
