The calculator estimates quantity only. It does not select the correct mortar, trowel notch, substrate preparation or required mortar transfer/coverage for the tile system.
Use measured installation area as the starting area. Tile cut/waste reserve is a tile-purchase concept and should not automatically be copied into mortar area; add only the separate planning allowance you intentionally want for mortar consumption.

How to measure this project

Measure the actual tiled surfaces that will receive mortar. For a backsplash, use the net tiled wall band after large untiled openings; for floors or shower walls, total each tiled plane. Do not add tile-box waste to mortar area automatically. Then read the selected mortar data sheet or package for the coverage range associated with the bag size and trowel/application you will actually use.

Before you buy materials

Use the calculator as a quantity cross-check, not as a mortar or trowel selector. Manufacturer coverage charts are estimates and actual consumption changes with substrate flatness, tile-back profile, troweling, transfer, back-troweling and jobsite technique. If the product gives a range, preserve that uncertainty instead of replacing it with one universal square-foot-per-bag value.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet does a bag of thinset cover?

There is no single universal coverage number. Coverage changes by product, bag size, trowel notch, tile and installation conditions. Enter the range published for the exact product/application you plan to use.

Why does the calculator show a bag range?

Many manufacturer coverage tables publish minimum and maximum estimated coverage. The tool preserves that range: higher coverage gives the best-yield bag count and lower coverage gives the conservative count.

Should I use my tile waste percentage as thinset waste?

Not automatically. Tile waste accounts for cuts, pattern and spare pieces. Mortar consumption is driven by actual mortar-receiving area plus product/application conditions, so use a separate mortar allowance only when justified.

Does this calculator tell me which trowel to use?

No. Trowel and mortar selection must follow the tile, substrate, environment and selected installation-system instructions.
