Start with installed mortar-receiving area
For a floor, use the floor area that will be tiled. For a backsplash, total the net tiled wall band after meaningful untiled openings. For a shower, add the tiled wall and floor planes that use the selected mortar. Extra tile purchased for cuts or future repairs is not extra wall or floor area, so tile-box waste should not automatically be copied into the mortar quantity.
Read the exact product coverage table
Use the selected manufacturer data sheet or bag, not a generic internet rate. Coverage tables can change with bag size and trowel notch, and some mortars are formulated differently enough that a coverage number from another product is not transferable. Record the lower and higher square-foot coverage that corresponds to the application you actually plan to install.
Keep the coverage range instead of averaging it away
If the data sheet says 60–67 sq ft per bag, an average such as 63.5 looks neat but hides the uncertainty the manufacturer intentionally published. Preserve both endpoints. Divide planning area by 67 for the best-yield count and by 60 for the conservative count, then round both upward to whole bags.
Use a separate mortar allowance only when justified
A small planning allowance can be useful for jobsite loss, extra back-troweling or conditions you expect to reduce effective yield, but it should be visible and editable. Do not quietly reuse a 10% or 15% tile waste factor because tile cuts and mortar consumption are different processes.
Quantity math does not choose the trowel or mortar
The calculator does not decide whether a mortar is appropriate for the tile, substrate, wet area, exterior exposure or membrane system. It also does not prove the required mortar transfer under the tile. Follow the tile, substrate and installation-system instructions for product and trowel selection, then use the resulting product coverage range as the quantity input.
Round bags only after the full area calculation
Do not round each small room, niche or wall segment to a separate bag unless they truly require separate products. Combine compatible areas first, apply the selected coverage range and allowance, then round at the purchase stage. Separate calculations are appropriate when different mortars, bag sizes or trowel/application coverage ranges are being used.

120 sq ft with a 60–67 sq ft/bag range
A 120 sq ft tile field with a 5% mortar allowance becomes 126 sq ft of planning area. At the high end of 67 sq ft/bag, 126 ÷ 67 = 1.88, so the best-yield purchase is 2 bags. At the low end of 60 sq ft/bag, 126 ÷ 60 = 2.10, so the conservative purchase is 3 bags. Showing 2–3 bags is more faithful than pretending one middle coverage rate is guaranteed.

A published coverage range describes real uncertainty in estimated yield. The high-coverage endpoint produces the best-yield bag count and the low endpoint produces the conservative count.
Should I add 10% thinset waste because I add 10% tile waste?
Not automatically. Tile waste covers cuts, pattern and spare pieces. Thinset should start from installed mortar-receiving area, with a separate allowance only when justified.
