Backsplash Tile vs Thinset: Keep the Allowances Separate

Backsplash tile and thinset start from the same installed wall band, but they do not use the same allowance logic. Tile purchasing must account for cuts, pattern matching and spare pieces. Thinset quantity starts from the wall area that actually receives mortar, then uses product- and application-specific coverage. Build one net measured backsplash field

Measure each backsplash segment at the actual finished tile height. Multiply run by height and subtract large untiled zones such as a tall window or a deliberately open hood area when appropriate. Small outlet cutouts usually still consume surrounding tile and do not need to be treated as large area deductions.

Tile waste belongs to tile purchasing

Thinset starts from net installed area
