Why this planning detail matters
Wall tile layouts often cover only part of a wall, making room perimeter formulas less useful than direct surface measurements. A backsplash may run between countertop and cabinets; a shower may have three full-height walls plus a niche. Measuring each tiled rectangle gives a much clearer base area.
How to measure or choose the starting value
Measure tiled width and height for each wall section. Add all areas. Subtract windows or doors only if tile does not continue into the reveal. Measure niches, returns, benches and side panels as additional surfaces when they will be tiled. Keep a sketch so the areas can be checked against the layout.
Adjustments that change the estimate
Pattern, tile size, cuts at corners, niches and plumbing penetrations affect waste. Decorative strips or trim pieces may be purchased by linear foot or piece and should be separated from field-tile square footage. Waterproofing requirements are also separate from the quantity of finish tile.
