Bathtub Surround Tile Calculator: Area & Boxes

Estimate tile for a three-wall bathtub surround without mixing the tub deck, bathroom floor or unrelated wall areas into the same takeoff. Measure the back wall and two side returns, subtract only meaningful untiled openings, then convert the net field into whole boxes using the actual coverage of the selected tile.

Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Gross surround area

(back wall width + 2 × side return depth) × tiled height

Measures the three vertical tiled fields above the tub.

Net tile field

gross surround area − large untiled openings

Deduct only openings that are genuinely not tiled.

Purchase target

net tile field × (1 + entered allowance)

Keep layout/cut reserve separate from the measured field.

Boxes to buy

round purchase target ÷ box coverage up to whole boxes

Use the actual coverage printed for the selected tile.

How to measure this project

Measure the back wall from inside corner to inside corner, each side return from the back corner to the finished tile termination, and the actual tiled height above the tub. If the two side returns differ, calculate them separately or use the sum of their measured widths rather than forcing one average. Record large windows or untiled access panels as explicit deductions. Niches, shelves and returns often add tile rather than reduce it, so keep those details outside a simple opening deduction unless you have measured their surfaces separately.

Before you buy materials

Use the box coverage for the exact tile SKU and keep pattern, cuts, breakage and matching reserve as a visible allowance. Large-format tile, diagonal layouts and heavily cut niches can create different waste behavior from a simple running bond. Waterproofing membranes, backer board, trim profiles, thinset and grout are separate materials. Verify the selected tile and installation system are suitable for the wet-area application before ordering.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as the Shower Tile Calculator?

No. This tool is for a tub surround wall field and excludes a shower floor; the Shower Tile Calculator models three walls plus a shower floor.

Should I subtract a niche opening?

Only if you also add the niche back and return surfaces separately. A niche can increase total tile even though it creates an opening in the main wall.

Does the result include waterproofing materials?

No. Waterproofing and substrate materials are separate from the finish-tile quantity.
