Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Ceiling area

length × width

Rectangular measured ceiling footprint.

Tile area

tile length × tile width

Uses actual entered tile dimensions.

Tile target

area with allowance ÷ tile area

Rounds individual tiles up.

Cartons

tiles ÷ pieces per carton

Rounds to whole cartons.

How to measure this project

Measure the ceiling at the finished plane and split irregular rooms into rectangles. Record soffits, bulkheads or large areas that will not receive tile as separate zones rather than reducing one dimension until it no longer represents the room.

Before you buy materials

Check whether the product is sold by tile, carton or nominal coverage. A balanced grid can create more border cuts than pure area arithmetic suggests, and owners often keep matching spare tiles for future replacement. Use the entered allowance to reflect that project decision.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Should I subtract light fixtures?

Usually small fixtures do not materially reduce purchase quantity because cuts still consume tiles. Large open areas can be treated separately.

Does this design the suspension grid?

No. It estimates tile quantity only; grid components and installation requirements are separate.

Why can carton rounding create a large surplus?

When cartons contain many tiles, one additional carton can add substantially more coverage than the calculated target.
