When to use this calculator

The framing design already establishes joist direction and spacing and you need joist count/footage.

Use a different calculator when

Use Deck Board for surface boards or Deck Post for an approved support grid; this tool does not verify span.

Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Intervals

deck width ÷ entered spacing

Rounds up so spacing does not exceed the input.

Base joists

intervals + 1

Simple edge-to-edge layout.

Total joists

base + entered extras

Adds doubled or project-specific members.

Stock pieces

total joist footage ÷ stock length

A quantity reference, not a cut optimization.

How to measure this project

Measure the deck dimension perpendicular to the joist direction to determine how many spacing intervals are needed. Measure the actual joist run separately. If the deck changes width, has bays, stairs or large openings, divide the framing into zones instead of forcing it into one rectangle.

Before you buy materials

This tool does not determine allowable joist span, species, grade, size, connection, beam location or code compliance. Enter spacing and member length from the approved design. Stock-piece arithmetic also assumes offcuts can be used efficiently, so review the actual cut plan before ordering.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator verify joist span?

No. It only converts an entered spacing and run into quantity; span and member design must be verified separately.

Why can the stock-piece reference be lower than the joist count?

It is pure linear-foot arithmetic. Real joists often need full-length pieces, so use the count as the primary purchasing check.

Does it include blocking?

No. Blocking, rim boards and special framing are separate materials unless you intentionally include them in the extra-member allowance.
