How the planner works
One deck model, five material decisions
The planner first resolves board direction. Decking courses run across one footprint dimension while each board follows the other; joists are modeled perpendicular to those boards. That same geometry then feeds the joist count, decking fastener intersections and perimeter-based railing estimate.
Decking
Installed board width plus entered gap forms one course module. The planner rounds the number of courses up, converts those courses into total linear decking, adds the selected waste allowance and finally rounds to whole stock boards.
Joists and deck screws
Entered joist spacing is converted into intervals across the board-run direction. Extra joists are explicit for blocking, picture-frame details or other project-specific needs. Deck-screw quantity is based on board-course × joist intersections and an editable screws-per-intersection value.
Support-grid quantity reference
The post number is only a rectangular grid count derived from the spacing you enter. It does not determine whether that spacing is structurally acceptable and it does not model beams, cantilevers, footings or ledger support.
Level railing
Gross deck perimeter minus the unrailed/open length becomes the level railing run. Horizontal rail stock is calculated separately from baluster infill. The clear baluster gap is an explicit project input because this tool must not invent a safety-critical opening.
Worked example
Example: a 16 × 12 ft deck
With boards running along the 16 ft length, 5.5 in boards, a 1/8 in installed gap and 10% waste, the surface uses roughly 26 board courses and about 458 linear ft of planned decking before whole-stock rounding. At an entered 16 in joist spacing, the 16 ft placement span creates 13 base joists before the two entered extra joists. The planner then applies the same resolved course/joist count to the fastener estimate.
The support-grid and railing outputs are intentionally presented as separate planning references. They become useful only after the project has an approved structural/support layout and a railing design with known spacing, rail count and baluster opening assumptions.
Before you buy
What to verify outside this planner
- Decking manufacturer rules for board gap, joist spacing, fasteners and butt-joint support.
- Structural drawings or qualified guidance for joist/beam spans, support locations, footings, ledger and connection details.
- Actual available stock lengths and whether cuts can be reused efficiently.
- Railing/guard system instructions and applicable safety requirements, especially allowed openings and stair geometry.
- Whether stairs, picture framing, breaker boards, fascia, skirting or other details need separate quantities.
