You need to close one measured deck-board field across the courses using either full-width boards with one solved equal side gap or a fixed entered side gap with balanced first/last edge rips.

Methodology

Deck-board field closure geometry & assumptions

Full-board exact gap

(clear field − board count × face width) ÷ (board count − 1)

Mode 1 evaluates feasible whole counts and chooses the exact gap closest to the entered target, subject to optional limits.

Balanced edge-rip width

(clear field − interior full boards × face width − all fixed gaps) ÷ 2

Mode 2 keeps the entered gap unchanged and splits the remaining board-face width equally between the two field edges.

Board-start mark

previous board start + previous board face width + side gap

Every displayed position is derived from the same datum; the first/last boards can be ripped in mode 2.

Field closure check

all board faces + all side gaps = measured clear field

Use the solved total as a geometry check before transferring marks; end gaps and longitudinal joints are outside this across-field model.

How to measure this project

Measure the finished clear width across the deck in the direction perpendicular to the surface boards. If a picture-frame border or divider board encloses the field, measure between those finished inside boundaries and solve each field separately. Measure actual board face width from the product or sample, and keep the board-running dimension for stock-length planning in Deck Board Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Why can the solved gap differ from the gap I entered?

Mode 1 keeps every board full width and needs a whole number of courses, so it solves the exact equal gap that closes the field. Use the optional min/max limits when the selected product defines an acceptable range. If the gap must remain fixed, use mode 2.

What does balanced edge rip mean?

Mode 2 keeps the entered side gap between courses and uses equal-width first and last boards to absorb the leftover field width. Interior boards remain full face width.

Does this tell me the correct deck-board gap?

No. Gapping is product- and system-specific. Enter the requirement from the current decking/fastener instructions and project conditions.

Does this include end-to-end board gaps?

No. This calculator solves width-to-width course layout across one field. End gaps, butt joints, abutments and temperature-dependent longitudinal details remain product/project-specific.

Can I use the course count as the number of stock boards to buy?

Not by itself. Stock quantity also depends on the board-running dimension, stock lengths, butt-joint layout, borders, waste and offcut reuse. Use Deck Board Calculator for purchasing.
