How to Measure Deck Board Layout Width

Deck-board quantity and deck-board layout start from different dimensions. Stock length follows the direction the boards run; spacing layout follows the clear width perpendicular to them. Mixing those dimensions is one of the easiest ways to get a course count that looks plausible but cannot close the finished field.

Measure perpendicular to the boards for spacing layout

If surface boards run along the deck length, the layout width is measured across them. This is the dimension that contains repeated board faces and side-to-side gaps. The board-running dimension belongs in the material takeoff because it determines linear footage and stock-board cuts; do not swap the two simply because the deck is rectangular.

Treat picture-frame and divider boards as real layout boundaries

A border board changes the clear field that interior courses must fill. Measure between the finished inside faces of the border condition rather than using the overall framing footprint. If a divider or breaker board splits the surface, solve each field separately unless the design intentionally continues one course layout through the break.

Use actual installed face width

Nominal lumber names and marketed product widths are not reliable layout dimensions. Use the actual finished face width of the selected board. A small width difference repeated across many courses can materially change the final gap or the width of an edge rip.

Obtain the side gap from the exact decking system

Measure from one datum and verify the far boundary

Keep quantity, fasteners and structure as separate layers

The spacing sheet can provide a surface course count, but purchasing still needs board-running length, stock sizes, waste, butt-joint strategy and border details. Fastener quantity also depends on joist intersections and the selected fastening system. Structural joist spacing and framing remain separate design inputs.

Use the finished field boundaries the repeated board courses must actually fill. Borders and divider boards can make this different from framing width.

Can I use nominal 5/4×6 as 6 inches?

What if the field width changes from one end to the other?

Record the real condition and decide how the project will handle out-of-square geometry. A single rectangular equal-spacing model cannot make two different field widths simultaneously exact.
