Deck Board Gap vs Balanced Edge Rips

A rectangular deck field usually does not divide perfectly into an integer number of board faces plus the preferred side gap. There are two clean geometric responses: adjust the equal gap slightly while keeping every course full width, or preserve the entered gap and split the leftover board-face width between matching edge rips. The right choice depends on the selected decking system and finish detail, not on arithmetic alone.

With N full-width boards there are N minus 1 interior side gaps. Once N is a whole number, the closing gap is (field − N × board face) ÷ (N − 1). When the side gap cannot move, the field remainder must be absorbed somewhere else. Balanced-edge mode keeps all interior gaps equal to the entered value, keeps interior boards full width and splits the remaining board-face width equally between the first and last courses. The formula can report an equal edge width, but it cannot know whether that width works with a picture-frame border, hidden-fastener clip, starter detail, overhang, fascia relationship or screw-placement requirement. Treat the edge width as a layout dimension to review against the exact detail before cutting.

Keep side gaps separate from end gaps and butt joints

This calculator addresses side-to-side spacing across board courses. Longitudinal end gaps, butt-joint treatment, abutments at solid objects and temperature-related movement can follow different product rules. Do not reuse a side-gap value automatically for those other joints.
