When to use this calculator

You already have an approved fastener schedule or area rate and need screw/box quantity.

Use a different calculator when

Use Drywall Calculator for sheets or Wall Stud for framing count; this tool does not choose screw spacing.

Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Base screws

area ÷ 100 × entered rate

Rate is a project input, not a code recommendation.

Allowance

base screws × extra %

Adds handling loss and project reserve.

Boxes

target screws ÷ box quantity

Rounds to whole boxes.

Budget

boxes × price

Optional fastener-only cost.

How to measure this project

Use the actual drywall coverage area as the quantity basis. If your installation plan uses different fastener rates for walls, ceilings, double layers or different framing conditions, calculate those zones separately rather than averaging unlike conditions.

Before you buy materials

Confirm screw type, length, corrosion protection, framing compatibility and fastener pattern with the board manufacturer, project documents and applicable requirements. This tool converts an entered rate into quantity; it does not design or approve the fastening schedule.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator tell me the correct screw spacing?

No. It deliberately requires you to enter a rate from the installation plan, manufacturer guidance or project requirements.

Should ceilings be calculated separately?

Yes when the fastening schedule differs from walls or other surfaces.

Can I use it for nails?

The arithmetic can estimate a quantity from an entered rate, but use a fastener type and schedule appropriate to the approved system.
