How to measure this project
Measure the clear framed width that will actually receive vertical infill on each gate leaf. If a gate has two leaves, record the repeated leaf count or calculate unequal leaves separately. Do not substitute the overall post-to-post opening when hinges, stiles or edge clearances reduce the infill zone. Keep frame geometry on the project sketch so the same physical width can be reused when comparing different picket or slat products.
Before you buy materials
Use the actual installed face width and the gap already chosen for the gate system. Small changes in gap can change the piece count across a short gate, so verify the layout before buying. Pack rounding can create meaningful surplus because gate quantities are small. Reuse surplus only when profile, length, finish and orientation match the main fence or another gate rather than assuming every extra piece is interchangeable.
