Assumptions & notes

Measure one clear panel between the defined inside faces of posts, pilasters or other layout boundaries. Do not mix a post-outside dimension with a clear-opening formula.
Use actual finished picket face width, not a nominal lumber name. Profiled or variable-width products need their own product-specific layout method.
Maximum-gap mode adds enough whole pickets to keep the exact equalized gap at or below the value you enter. That entered value must come from the project, product or applicable requirements; HomeMeasureLab does not choose it.
Equal-edge-gap mode creates one more gap than pickets. Flush-edge mode creates one fewer internal gap than pickets and places the first/last pickets against the panel boundaries.
Pool barriers, guards, gates, animal-containment and other regulated/life-safety applications can have different opening, climbability, gate and structural requirements. This calculator is a geometric layout aid only and does not certify compliance.
Transfer marks from one datum rather than stepping off a rounded spacer repeatedly. Verify the last mark against the real panel before fastening finished material.

gap = (opening − count × picket width) ÷ (count + 1)

Used when equal clear spaces appear at both panel boundaries.

Flush-edge layout

gap = (opening − count × picket width) ÷ (count − 1)

Used when first and last pickets land flush at the two boundaries.

Maximum-gap mode

smallest whole count whose solved gap ≤ entered maximum

Back-solves the exact equal gap after choosing a whole picket count.

Center pitch

picket width + exact gap

Center-to-center spacing between adjacent equal-width pickets.

How to measure this project

Measure the clear opening for one fence panel between its actual layout boundaries after posts or other fixed elements are established. Check the opening at the rail locations if posts are not perfectly parallel, and use the dimension that matches the intended picket plane. Measure the finished face width of a representative picket. Keep gates, corners, stepped grades and separate panels as independent layout fields instead of averaging them into one long run.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the exact gap smaller than the maximum gap I entered?

The calculator can only use a whole number of equal-width pickets. It selects enough pickets to stay at or below the entered maximum, then distributes the leftover opening equally.

Should I include gaps at the two panel edges?

Choose the edge condition that matches the design. Equal-edge mode includes a clear space at both ends; flush-edge mode places the first and last pickets against the boundaries and spaces only the interior openings.

Can this tell me the legal gap for a pool fence?

No. Pool barriers and other regulated fences can have configuration-specific opening, gate and climbability rules. Use the requirements that apply to the actual project; this page only solves geometry from values you enter.

Why should I use one datum instead of a spacer block repeatedly?

Rounding a gap and stepping it repeatedly can accumulate error. Datum-based edge or center marks keep the full panel tied to one measured reference and make the closing check visible.
