When to use this calculator

You are filling a rectangular garden bed and want soil volume, settling allowance and bag/bulk purchasing.

Use a different calculator when

Use Topsoil for broad lawn/grading areas or Compost for top-dressing/amendment volume.

Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Bed volume

length × width × depth

Depth is converted from inches.

Settling allowance

base volume × settling %

Adds material for expected settling.

Bulk yards

planned ft³ ÷ 27

Bulk-order reference.

Bags

ceiling(planned ft³ ÷ bag volume)

Rounds to whole bags.

How to measure this project

Measure the inside bed length and width and the average depth you intend to fill. For tapered or irregular beds, divide them into sections and sum the volumes. Record the dimensions you used and recheck any section that is irregular, tapered or interrupted before relying on the final quantity.

Before you buy materials

Soil blends settle differently and bag volumes vary. Use the package volume or supplier bulk specification and avoid filling raised beds entirely with dense topsoil unless appropriate for the planting plan. Compare the calculated target with the exact package, coverage and availability offered by the supplier, then round only at the final purchase step.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as topsoil?

It can be used for soil volume, but raised-bed blends often contain compost and other components.

Should I fill the bed to the top?

Account for mulch, settling and the desired final soil line below the bed edge.

Does the calculator subtract existing soil?

No. Enter only the depth of new material you plan to add.
