Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Bed area

length × width

Rectangular planning area.

Mulch volume

bed area × depth

Depth is converted from inches to feet.

Bulk yards

cubic feet ÷ 27

Useful for bulk landscape supplier orders.

Bag count

cubic feet ÷ bag volume, rounded up

The calculator shows common 2 cu ft and 3 cu ft package counts.

How to measure this project

Measure landscape beds at their widest practical dimensions. For curved beds, split the shape into smaller rectangles or use an average width along the bed length. Enter the finished mulch depth rather than the height of an uncompacted pile.

Before you buy materials

Existing mulch, settling and bed contours can change the amount needed. Bulk mulch is normally ordered by volume, while bagged mulch is sold in fixed cubic-foot packages. Compare the calculated volume with the package label or supplier bucket size before buying.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many bags are in one cubic yard of mulch?

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it is equivalent to 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags or 9 three-cubic-foot bags before rounding.

Should I remove old mulch before calculating?

Calculate only the new depth you intend to add. If usable mulch is already in place, a top-up depth may be smaller than a full new installation.

Does the calculator account for settling?

No automatic settling factor is added. Increase depth or order quantity if your material and installation method typically settle significantly.
