Direct answer

Grass seed calculator: estimate seed from lawn area and label rate

Seed weight = lawn area × application rate. Match the rate units to the area units, use the selected seed label for new-lawn versus overseeding rates, and round purchase quantity to the actual package size separately.

  • Use the application rate on the selected seed label.
  • New-lawn and overseeding rates can differ.
  • Package rounding happens after seed weight is calculated.

The calculator handles area and package math. Seeding rate stays a user/product-label input; Home Measure Lab does not prescribe a universal seed rate.

    Add your current local costs

Use a current supplier subtotal or reuse a priced calculator result, then add optional delivery, tax and contingency. Home Measure Lab does not fetch or guess live prices.

Uses the calculator's user-entered price result when one is currently shown; otherwise enter a current supplier subtotal.

    Methodology

    Formula & assumptions

    Lawn area

    length × width

    Use total seedable area.

    Base seed

    area ÷ 1,000 × seeding rate

Rate should match the grass seed label and whether you are seeding new turf or overseeding.

    Planned seed

    base seed × (1 + extra allowance %)

Adds a small purchasing or application buffer.

    Bag count

planned seed ÷ bag size, rounded up

Whole packages are used for the purchase plan.

    How to measure this project

Measure the lawn area that will actually be seeded and subtract patios, buildings or established beds when they are significant. For irregular lawns, divide the space into rectangles and triangles or use a mapping measurement as a cross-check.

    Before you buy materials

The most important input is the label seeding rate. New-lawn and overseeding rates can differ substantially, and seed blends vary by species. The calculator does not choose a grass type for your climate; it only converts your selected rate into a project quantity.

Supports: A manufacturer example shows different published coverage for a new lawn versus overseeding and instructs users to follow the product label.

Boundary: This is an example demonstrating why label rates differ; HomeMeasureLab does not use this product as a universal seed-rate default.

    Questions

    Frequently asked questions

What grass seed rate should I use?

Use the rate printed on the exact seed product for your project type. This calculator intentionally keeps the rate editable instead of assuming one universal value.

Does the calculator include germination loss?

No separate germination factor is applied. Use the product rate and your chosen extra allowance; seed quality, soil preparation and watering affect establishment.

    Can I calculate overseeding?

Yes. Enter the overseeding rate from the product label rather than the new-lawn rate.
