Methodology

Formula & assumptions

Lawn area

length × width

Measured turf area.

Purchase area

lawn area × (1 + waste %)

Provides material for cuts and damaged pieces.

Pieces / rolls

purchase area ÷ coverage per piece, rounded up

Use supplier coverage for the exact sod format.

Pallets

purchase area ÷ coverage per pallet, rounded up

Pallet coverage differs by supplier and sod type.

How to measure this project

Measure the lawn sections that will receive sod and add their areas. Curved boundaries, trees and beds create cutting waste even when their physical area is excluded. Use supplier dimensions for rolls, slabs or pieces because formats vary.

Before you buy materials

Sod is perishable and often sold by pallet, piece or square foot. Confirm pallet coverage, minimum order and delivery timing with the supplier. The waste allowance should cover edge cuts and a small amount of unusable material, not poor subgrade preparation.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much extra sod should I buy?

Five percent is a useful starting point for simple rectangular areas, but curved edges, many obstacles or irregular pieces may require more.

Why does the pallet count round up?

The calculator assumes whole pallets when using pallet coverage. Suppliers may allow mixed pallet and piece orders, so use the detailed area result when requesting a quote.

Does sod coverage vary by supplier?

Yes. Piece dimensions and pallet square footage vary, which is why both coverage inputs are editable.
