Plants, boulders and structures may displace some material, but subtracting every small item can create false precision. Sloped beds also have more surface area than their flat plan view. For typical gentle beds, plan-view measurements are often adequate for material planning; for steep or highly irregular terrain, more detailed measurement may be worthwhile.
