How to measure this project

Measure inside cell width and length near the representative body of the cell and the depth you actually fill. If the tray is strongly tapered, a simple rectangular cell overstates volume; use the fill-factor input as an explicit approximation or measure one tray by filling it with a known volume. Keep different tray formats in separate calculations.

Before you buy materials

Enter the actual bag volume for the seed-starting medium. Mix can fluff or compress during filling, so the example fill factor and allowance are not universal defaults. Whole-bag rounding naturally creates surplus that may be useful for top-up or transplanting; keep that surplus visible rather than inflating the tray dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work for tapered plug cells?

It uses a rectangular-cell basis plus an explicit fill factor. For strongly tapered cells, a measured fill test is more accurate.

Does the tool recommend how deep to sow seeds?

No. The entered cell depth is the medium fill depth for quantity planning, not crop-specific sowing depth.

Can I combine different tray sizes?

Use separate calculations for different tray formats, then combine bags only when the same medium is used.
