How to measure this project

Measure inside top diameter, inside bottom diameter and the actual depth you intend to fill with mix. Do not use outside decorative dimensions when walls are thick. If the planter has a false bottom or reservoir, measure only the usable soil chamber. Group containers only when their internal geometry is close enough to share one calculation.

Before you buy materials

Use the net volume printed for the selected potting mix. The allowance can cover settling, small spills and top-up, but it should not hide a large root-ball or drainage-layer displacement. For large specimen plants, estimate those displacements separately and reduce the fill volume before converting to bags.

Frequently asked questions

Why use top and bottom diameter?

Many planters taper. A truncated-cone model is more representative than treating a strongly tapered pot as a straight cylinder.

Does the result subtract the plant root ball?

No. If the root ball or insert occupies a substantial volume, estimate that displacement separately before buying.

Can I use this for rectangular planters?

This calculator is for round tapered containers. Use a rectangular volume method for box-shaped planters.
